Doug Williamson Artist Biography

Doug Williamson

Doug Williamson is a young graduate from the University of Calgary Fine Arts program. His major was in Sculpture, but upon completion he traded the hammer and chisel for the brush and palette. A majority of Doug’s interest lies in the works of the old Dutch masters, therefore after university he sought to further his education with renowned American painter David Leffel. This neo-classical training facilitated the “Alla Prima” approach to painting, and for Doug this wet into wet style not only deepened his respect for the Renaissance master, but Impressionists alike.

Doug’s concentration has continued to be that of the still life genre, but he has found a renewed interest into the understanding of portraiture and landscape as well. Whatever subject he investigates he still stays close to the Flemish approach; though his newer works have manipulated everyday objects into a “classical-pop” manner. Regardless of which direction Doug may take, his work tries to honour the past technically, the present conceptually, and the future expectantly. He says, “To me painting is an enigma; It is ever evolving in subject, concept, and application. But whatever changes it may take, it is still about the paint.”

Doug currently resides with his beloved wife and two cats (also known as his greatest critics) in Calgary, Alberta. He is not one to keep his secrets to himself and teaches part-time at a local art studio. His work is shown with Wallace Galleries Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta, and is in numerous private and corporate collections across Canada, U.S.A., and Europe.
